The Office of Undergraduate Admissions is seeking graduate students for graduate student service appointments during Winter Quarter 2010. These positions offer a valuable hands-on opportunity to participate with admissions professionals in the review of undergraduate applications for Autumn Quarter 2010. Multiple positions available!

DATES OF EMPLOYMENT: December 16-February 28 (five pay periods). Must be available for weekday training December 16-18 and December 28-31–no exceptions. Please note: The first three days of mandatory training overlap with the final three days of exam period in Autumn Quarter. On December 16, training will run for approx. 5 hours.

HOURS: 183 hours over 5 pay periods; approximately 19 hours per week. Available work hours—8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. weekdays; extended in-office reading hours offered—5:00-8:00 p.m. 3 nights each week; weekly Saturday hours provided. All files must be read in the Office of Admissions during regular office hours or during the (optional) extended evening hours and Saturdays. No files will be taken home.

CREDIT LOAD: Must be formally enrolled in a tuition-based program (not fee-based or self-sustaining) in the UW Graduate School for at least 10 credits during Winter Quarter 2010.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Readers will assess freshman applications, using a combination of personal and academic factors. Applications are assessed by two Readers separately, and final admission decisions are made by Admissions administrators, based on Reader assessments.

NOAA Coral Reef Fellowships

Coral Reef Management Fellows, NOAA’s Coral Reef Conservation Program (US Territories)

I.M. Systems Group (http://www.imsg.com/), a contractor to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), is seeking individuals to serve as Coral Reef Management Fellows. The Coral Reef Management Fellowship Program is administered by NOAA’s Coral Reef Conservation Program (CRCP) which supports effective management and sound science to preserve, sustain and restore valuable coral reef ecosystems.

 

The Fellowship Program is a two year program beginning January 2010 and ending January 2012. Fellows are located in Pago Pago, American Samoa; Saipan, Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI); Miami, Florida; Adelup, Guam; Hawai`i (exact location to be determined by September 2009); Puerto Rico (exact location determined during interview) and St. Croix, U.S.Virgin Islands (USVI). Duties and qualifications vary depending on the location of the position.

FISH/BIOL 340 Introduction to Molecular Ecology and Genetics

* Academic standing as a UW Graduate Student and eligibility to hold a
Graduate Student  Assistantship.
* Availability for full appointment timeframe (Sept 16- Dec 15).  If
course requirements extend beyond the 15th, it is expected the TA and
Faculty would work together to complete course requirements, which may involve student working past this date.
* Experience with molecular DNA methods, including reagent
preparation, DNA extraction, PCR and electrophoresis.
* Website creation and maintenance skills.
* Background and experience in tasks listed under TA responsibilities
as well as knowledge/background in ecology and evolution and at least some familiarity with software used in molecular ecology.
* Current certification in First Aid, CPR (or must have by start of
course, if hired).
* TA should plan to attend both the UW TA conference and the COFS TA
practical training (approx. 2.5 days) in mid-late Sept.

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum
qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a
license/certification/registration.

Desired:  * Experience as a teaching assistant or related experience

The UW Upward Bound (UB) started in 1983.  A U.S. Department of
Education-funded program, Upward Bound’s goal is to provide high school students with the skills and motivation to enter and complete a 4-year college degree.  Students participate in a full range of courses and training sessions during the instruction period. During Summer 2009, approximately 82 students from Cleveland, Franklin, and Nathan Hale High Schools within the Seattle School District will participate in UB on the UW Seattle campus. UB will collaborate with the Program on the Environment (PoE) to offer an introduction to environmental studies course as the primary lecture course during UB 2009.

The NASA Graduate Student Researchers Program (GSRP) awards fellowships for graduate study leading to masters or doctoral degrees in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics related to NASA research and development. This twelve month award includes an internship at the NASA Center affiliated with the NASA sponsored research. The program supports approximately 120 graduate students annually.
